OpenAI has reversed the Pro 200 allowance cut it announced on September 29, 2026. Its help page on Pro tiers says: "The reduction announced in our September 29 email is canceled." OpenAI also doubled the Work and Codex allowance on Pro 100 and Pro 500, and on the lower Pro 200 allowance. Its release notes date the change October 29, 2026.

The change covers Work and Codex allowances. It is not a doubling of every limit, and OpenAI has not published the new allowances as numbers.

#What changed on Pro 200?

The release notes say: "We’ve also canceled the Pro 200 reduction announced in our September 29 email." On September 29, 2026, the release notes had said: "Included usage allowances are changing. Users affected by these changes will receive an email with additional details."

The help page gives Pro 200 subscribers these changes, in OpenAI's words:

  • Higher allowance. "If you already had the higher Work and Codex allowance, you keep it."
  • Lower allowance. "If you had the lower allowance, it has doubled to match."
  • Same for everyone. "All Pro 200 subscriptions now include the same Work and Codex allowance."
  • Price. "Your subscription price stays at $200/month."
  • New subscribers. "New Pro 200 subscriptions are available from the pricing page and include the increased Work and Codex allowance."
  • Chat messages. "On Pro 200, the lower weekly limit now matches the higher one."

The release notes put it this way: "Starting October 29, Pro 200 subscribers on the lower allowance get twice their previous Work and Codex allowance, bringing them up to the same limit."

OpenAI is clear that the higher allowance did not double: "On Pro 200, only the lower allowance doubled." Pro 200 also gets no new models. "Your subscription remains Pro 200. Ultrafast is available only on Pro 500."

#What changed on Pro 100 and Pro 500?

The help page says: "Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance." The release notes use nearly the same words: "Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance."

Chat limits on those two plans stay put. "Pro 100 and Pro 500 keep their current weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat," the help page says. "These message limits are separate from your Work and Codex allowance."

Prices are unchanged: the help page lists Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500 a month. It says "Pro 500 offers the highest included usage of the three plans" and "Among Pro plans, Ultrafast is available only on Pro 500."

#Who gets the change, and what about Plus?

OpenAI says: "New subscriptions include the updated allowance, and existing subscribers receive it automatically without waiting for renewal." For Pro 200, it adds: "If your subscription is active, you don’t need to cancel and resubscribe to get the updated allowance."

Plus is not part of this. The help page says: "Plus usage is unchanged."

OpenAI's October 29, 2026 release notes also cover Business Premium: "We’re increasing the Work and Codex usage included in Pro and Business Premium plans."

#Does double the allowance mean double the work?

Not necessarily, OpenAI says. "The amount of work you can complete still depends on the model, task, and settings. A larger allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks." Fast and Ultrafast modes also use the allowance faster: "Fast mode uses your included allowance at 2.5 times the rate, and Ultrafast for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol uses it at 8 times the rate."

#What did The Decoder report?

The Decoder reported: "The changes affect Work and Codex quotas on the Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans, which both get twice the previous allotment." It said that "On Pro 200, OpenAI doubled the lower quota and reversed a planned cut after user pushback." OpenAI's own pages give no reason for the cancellation.

#How does this change our earlier coverage?

We covered the Pro tiers in our Pro 500 article and the September 29 launch in our DevDay 2026 roundup. Both described a lower Pro 200 allowance for subscriptions that were not grandfathered. Per OpenAI's help page, that no longer applies: all Pro 200 subscriptions include the same Work and Codex allowance. For how Codex fits alongside OpenAI's other agents, see Dots vs ChatGPT agent vs Codex.

Our analysis: For most Pro subscribers this is a straight gain, and for Pro 200 users on the lower allowance it removes a cut that had been planned. But OpenAI has not said how large any allowance is, so the doubling is relative to numbers it never published on these pages. Its own warning that a larger allowance "does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks" is the honest way to read it.

#What is still unclear?

  • The numbers. OpenAI gives no figures for the new allowances.
  • The reason. OpenAI's pages do not say why it canceled the reduction.
  • Business Premium. No OpenAI figures for Business Premium are published.
