OpenAI launched Dots on September 29, 2026 at DevDay in San Francisco: always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra that keep working on their own cloud computer and can be reached in ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. As of September 29, 2026, the first Dot is included at no extra cost for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and Enterprise (including Edu and Healthcare) can try a beta once a workspace admin turns it on.

OpenAI’s launch post calls Dots “remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything.” They learn from feedback, work toward goals around the clock, and connect through plugins that OpenAI says cover more than 4,000 apps. You can open a Dot’s cloud computer to inspect its work, or let it use your laptop.

#What did OpenAI announce at DevDay?

OpenAI’s recap calls DevDay 2026 its biggest yet, with more than 20 major announcements. Dots are the headline agent: they take ongoing responsibility instead of answering one chat and stopping.

OpenAI’s launch post tells people to create the first Dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser, connect apps, and let it introduce itself. Its developer example describes watching customer feedback, preparing fixes, and bringing tested pull requests for review.

#How do Dots work?

A Dot is a persistent ChatGPT agent. OpenAI says you give it goals and define what it can do on its own. It works through steps, adapts as facts change, and keeps going between conversations. It brings results back for review and asks you for decisions that need judgment.

Launch-page examples include watching customer feedback and preparing pull requests, rewriting launch materials, rerunning scientific analysis, updating a sales proposal, and turning a transcript into clip drafts.

Dots can start ChatGPT Work and Codex tasks. Conversations with the Dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits. Work and Codex tasks it starts still count against those products as usual. Plans include an allowance for deeper work, with extended limits for the first month after launch.

#Where can you talk to a Dot?

OpenAI says you can message or call Dots in ChatGPT on desktop, web, and mobile, and message them in Slack and Teams, with texting coming soon. They can ping you with progress, questions, or decisions.

ChatGPT documentation is stricter on setup. Create the Dot on desktop first. Mobile web is not supported. After setup, use the same Dot in the mobile app when that update is available. #Who gets Dots, and what does it cost?

As of September 29, 2026, OpenAI is rolling Dots out to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. ChatGPT documentation names Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 for users aged 18 and older outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, and says Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide. Enterprise Dots start off until a workspace admin enables them; the launch post includes Edu and Healthcare in that beta. The first Dot is included on Pro and Business Premium at no extra cost. Specialist Dots are a separate preview: company-owned agents with their own identity for jobs such as procurement or support, with Microsoft Agent 365 integration in the works. Those pilots are not the personal Dot.

#What safeguards did OpenAI describe?

Each Dot works on its own cloud computer. Your machine stays separate unless you connect it. Supported sign-ins can use saved passwords without putting them in the model’s context. Background “proactive research” is read-only: OpenAI says it cannot send messages, change app content, or control a browser or computer. Custom Rules and Auto-review gate actions that affect accounts or share information. Changing a password stays with you. Monitoring can pause or stop a Dot.
