Google began rolling out Gemini's Personal Intelligence on Android Auto on October 20, 2026, so Gemini can use information from your Google apps to answer questions while you drive. Cars with Google built-in get it "in the coming months," according to Google's announcement. It is for eligible personal Google accounts aged 18 and older, and Google excludes several regions.
#What changed?
Google says Gemini is now available globally on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Personal Intelligence adds personal context: with your permission, it connects information from Workspace (including Gmail and Google Calendar), Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search, according to Google, which says the connection is made "securely."
"Personal Intelligence has two core strengths: retrieving specific details from, say, an email, photo or a place you saved in Google Maps to answer your question and reasoning across complex sources," Google wrote.
#What can you ask it in the car?
Google gives examples:
- Flights: "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" Google says Gemini answers both at once, without you finding the confirmation email first.
- Food on the way: "Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe." Google says a vegetarian would get "a shortlist of places that fit your needs."
- Appointments: "Take me to my doctor’s appointment." Google says you don't need to look up the street address first.
Google's other examples find a car wash from a photo and a coffee shop from an earlier chat.
#How do the privacy controls work?
"Your apps aren’t connected until you choose to turn it on, and you can turn it off anytime in your Gemini settings," Google says. "And cars with Google built-in only share personal responses when you’re in the car with your phone connected."
If you already turned it on in the Gemini app, "it comes with you into the car," Google says. Without it, navigation, music, calls and questions still work, "but the answers won't be tailored to you."
Ars Technica noted that "Personal Intelligence is off by default, but it’s possible you’ve turned it on at some point while interacting with Gemini." To check, Ars says, "You’re looking for the “Connected Apps” section, where you can toggle Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, etc.), Search, Photos, and more." Ars also raised a shared-screen concern: "There may be other people interacting with the screen in your car, so perhaps you don’t want more of your account data informing replies."
Google's car help page says: "When you use Gemini with Android Auto, Gemini is available to anyone in the vehicle, including children." It also warns that Gemini in Android Auto "can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual so should not be relied on for critical information or safety-related matters while operating the vehicle."
On training, Google's Connected Apps help page says "Gemini does not train generative AI models directly on your Gmail inbox, Drive, Contacts, Calendar or other Workspace apps," but that "we train our generative AI models off of these summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences."
#Who can use it and when?
Google's exact eligibility wording: "Personal Intelligence is currently rolling out to eligible personal Google accounts (and not for Workspace business, enterprise, or education users) aged 18 and older globally, excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria."
Item | Google's terms |
|---|---|
Android Auto | Rolling out from October 20, 2026 |
Cars with Google built-in | "in the coming months" |
Accounts | Eligible personal Google accounts, "not for Workspace business, enterprise, or education users" |
Age | 18 and older |
Not offered in | "the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria" |
Keep Activity | Must be on, per Google's help page |
Google's help page adds that the feature "isn’t available when you sign in to a work, school, or supervised Google Account" and that it "is being released gradually and may not be available to you just yet." Google's Personal Intelligence overview page calls it "a beta."
Google lists no paid-plan requirement for Personal Intelligence on its help page. Ars Technica reports: "It started as a paid feature but eventually came to all Gemini users." Google says the Contacts connection "requires an AI Ultra subscription" and is US only and English only.
For Gemini on Android Auto, Google's help page lists "An Android phone with at least 2 GB of RAM, running Android 11 or newer," with "Gemini set as your digital assistant" and "A vehicle that supports Android Auto." It also says "Gemini and Android Auto are not available in all languages and regions."
#How does it compare?
Ars Technica said Google often releases new car features on cars with Google built-in first, and "This time, it’s the other way around." #What is still unclear?
- Languages. Google has not said which languages Personal Intelligence supports in the car.
- Cars with Google built-in. Google says only "in the coming months." Ars asked whether those cars get their own settings and had no answer at publication.
- Which apps work in the car. Google's help pages list more connections, such as Google Wallet, but do not say which work on Android Auto.
